“Tron” is an active-duty U.S. Marine Corps captain who has been stationed in and traveled throughout the Asia-Pacific region since the mid-1990s. He has served in operational assignments in the Southern Philippines, East Timor, Iraq, and the Southwest Asia. From 2009 – 2011, he was an Olmsted Scholar at National Sun Yat-sen University, Kaohsiung, Taiwan. He graduated with a master’s degree in China and Asia-Pacific Studies in June 2011.
The Olmsted Scholar Program is the flagship instrument of the George and Carol Olmsted Foundation designed to give promising young U.S. military officers an opportunity to learn a foreign language and pursue graduate-level education in the liberal arts at a foreign university. The motto of the Olmsted Foundation is that “The greatest leaders must be educated broadly.” Olmsted Scholars become immersed in the culture and language of their host countries and bring those unique experiences back to benefit the U.S. military at large in follow-on assignments.
